Windows: One of the annoyances in Windows 8 is that the full-screen (formerly "Metro") apps can only be run, well, full-screen or snapped in a pane at the side. They don't work like Windows desktop apps. ModernMix fixes this problem, letting you run those full-screen apps in their own windows on the desktop.
ModernMix isn't free; after a 30-day trial, to continue using it, you'll need to pay $4.99. But it's the best five bucks you might ever spend if you're a Windows 8 user.
The app offers settings for how to treat full-screen apps when you launch them from the desktop or from the Windows 8 start screen. You can also switch from full-screen to window mode for each app and let ModernMix remember your settings for next time.
The handy utility also lets you pin full-screen apps to the taskbar, essentially integrating the modern apps with your traditional desktop ones.
This app comes to us from Stardock, makers of Start8, Fences, and other useful programs.
