Leading light in science, Italy's 'lady of the stars' Hack dies

ROME | Sat Jun 29, 2013 11:51am EDT

ROME (Reuters) - Astrophysicist Margherita Hack, a popular science writer, public intellectual and the first woman to lead an astronomical observatory in Italy, died on Saturday at the age of 91.

Known as the "lady of the stars", Hack's research contributed to the spectral classification of many groups of stars, and the asteroid 8558 Hack is named after her.

She introduced astrophysics to a broad Italian audience, from university textbooks to colorful tomes of astronomy for children, and was astronomy chair at the University of Trieste and director of the Trieste Astronomical Observatory from 1964 to 1987, the first woman to hold the position.

Hack was one of Italy's most visible scientists over her career and remained a grey-haired media presence into her 90s, often consulted for her assessment of the issues of the day from a wooden rocking chair in her book-lined Trieste home.

An outspoken atheist in a predominantly Catholic country, Hack was known for her opposition to the influence of religious beliefs over scientific research, and lobbied for legalized abortion, euthanasia, animal protection and gay rights.

One of her many books, "Why I am Vegetarian", published at the age of 89, outlined Hack's belief that there was no difference between human and animal pain and that eating meat damaged the environment, sparking debate in a country with a proud tradition of meatballs, beef pasta dishes and cured hams.

In December 2012 she told a reporter she had decided not to have a heart operation that could prolong her life, wryly commenting that she might as well save the Italian public health service the money, and saying she preferred to stay at home with her books and her husband of seven decades, Aldo De Rosa.

"I do not believe in the afterlife," she said, chuckling and animated, in her final television appearance in March. "When I die my particles will flutter about the terrestrial atmosphere."

2013 NBA Free Agents: 10 Players Who Will Overvalue Themselves

2012-13 Salary: $2,806,452

Age: 27?

J.R. Smith turned down a $2.9 million player option for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

This was absolutely the right thing to do, as Smith was vastly underpaid after winning the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award.? Smith played in 80 games, averaging 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game off the bench.

While he would like to return to the Knicks, they may not have the money to keep him happy.

New York is well over the salary cap (thanks, Amar'e) and is limited with what it can offer.

This according to Ian Begley of ESPN New York:

"... retaining Smith is the Knicks' top offseason priority, according to a league source. They can offer him a contract starting at approximately $5 million per season with standard raises over four years, using the Early Bird exception."

Smith doesn't strike me as the type of guy who's going to be happy making just $5 million, especially not after coming off a career year..

We'll see how much Smith truly wants to return to the Knicks next season, or if he'll opt for the big paycheck instead.

5 things to watch Monday at Wimbledon

(AP) ? Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament that schedules all 16 men's and women's fourth-round matches on the second Monday. Here are five matches to watch:

1. SERENA WILLIAMS vs. SABINE LISICKI: If Williams' 34-match winning streak is going to face a real challenge, it might just come from Lisicki, the 23rd-seeded German who upset Maria Sharapova in last year's fourth round at the All England Club and is now working with Kim Clijsters' former coach, Wim Fissette. Williams owns the undisputed best serve of any active woman ? and perhaps of any woman, of any era ? but Lisicki can smack 'em, too: Her season ace total ranks No. 2 behind Williams, and she's won 27 of 29 service games this tournament. Lisicki is "dangerous when she dictates points," said Patrick Mouratoglou, the French coach who's been helping Williams during the stretch in which she's won 77 of 80 matches and three of the last four Grand Slam titles.

___

2. NOVAK DJOKOVIC vs. TOMMY HAAS: After his gut-wrenching, 9-7 fifth-set loss to Rafael Nadal in the French Open semifinals, Djokovic didn't sulk; he came out stronger than ever. For the first time, he reached the second week of Wimbledon without dropping a set, and he made only three unforced errors in the third round. But the top-seeded Djokovic hasn't faced much of a test yet. He could against Haas, who eliminated Djokovic en route to the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals, and also defeated him at Key Biscayne in March, becoming the third-oldest man since 1968 to beat the No. 1 player. If the 35-year-old Haas can do it again, he'll become the oldest Wimbledon quarterfinalist since Tom Okker in 1979. When they met at Roland Garros, though, Djokovic topped Haas in straight sets.

___

3. ANDY MURRAY VS. MIKHAIL YOUZHNY: Think anyone around here might tune in for this one? Murray is their man, their hope to end a 77-year drought without a British male champion at Wimbledon. He gets loud support from the stands ? and also loud groans when he misses a makeable shot. Murray's popularity skyrocketed when he bared his emotions and teared up during his runner-up speech after losing to Roger Federer in last year's Wimbledon final, so imagine how big a deal he became a month later when he beat Federer at the All England Club to win a gold medal at the London Olympics, not to mention when he finally won his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open. Murray has won 14 consecutive grass-court matches, and 20 of his past 21, but Youzhny is no pushover. The 20th-ranked Russian reached the final on grass at a tuneup tournament before Wimbledon, was a quarterfinalist at the All England Club in 2012, and twice reached Grand Slam semifinals. He's also a character. He once made himself bleed by hammering himself in his head with a racket; used his foot to write a word of apology in the red clay at Roland Garros during a 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 loss last year; and destroyed a racket at this year's French Open by whacking it nine times against his sideline seat.

___

4. LUKAS KUBOT vs. ADRIAN MANNARINO: You might never have heard of these guys, but one will be a 2013 Wimbledon quarterfinalist. Kubot is ranked 130th, Mannarino 111th, which is why theirs is the only men's or women's fourth-round match scheduled for Court 14 and its 312 spectators' seats. Their matchup pits one guy who's been serving really well (Mannarino and Djokovic are the only two men who have not lost a service game so far) against another who's been returning really well (Kubot leads the remaining 16 men in percentage of return points won against first serve, 44, and in percentage of return games won, 50). The winner of Kubot-Mannarino faces the winner of Jerzy Janowicz against Jurgen Melzer, so a member of that quartet will end up in the semifinal spot that pretty much everyone figured would belong to Federer or Nadal.

___

5. SLOANE STEPHENS VS. MONICA PUIG; LAURA ROBSON vs. KAIA KANEPI: OK, so listing two matches here raises the total to six to watch, but they're both worth a mention. Stephens is 20, and both Puig and Robson are 19; the trio represents some of the top up-and-coming talent on the women's tour. "There's definitely a new generation," Williams said. "I feel like this might be the beginning of, maybe, the future. I mean, eventually there's going to have to be a shift." Stephens, an American, is seeded 17th, and into the fourth round for the fourth time in the past five Grand Slam tournaments, including a run to the Australian Open semifinals in January, when she beat Williams. So Stephens must be considered the favorite against Puig, a Puerto Rican who is ranked 65th and playing in only her second major after reaching two junior Grand Slam finals. Robson, meanwhile, is the first British woman in the final 16 at Wimbledon since 1998, and therefore a big crowd favorite ? not to mention someone who's been drawing a lot of attention here for Twitter interactions with members of the popular boy band One Direction. Kanepi, 28, is far more experienced and accomplished at this point, having played in four Grand Slam quarterfinals.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, best smartphone camera? Nope!

Home ? Asia, Technology ? Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, best smartphone camera? Nope!

?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is a new type of smartphone which tries to blur the line between smartphones and digital cameras. The S4 Zoom is somewhat related to the Samsung Galaxy S4 though in many ways it resembles the the old Samsung Galaxy S2 actually, and not even the S3.

Although this is not the first smartphone to pack a real camera with optical zoom, it?s indeed a rarity and a very welcomed one.

Back in 2009 Samsung released its first smartphone with an optical 12MP camera called Samsung SCH-W880 AMOLED 12. After 4 years Samsung finally released its second smartphone with an optical camera called Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, a part of market which seems to develop extremely slow.

The Galaxy S4 Zoom packs a 16MP camera with a huge 10x optical zoom. Even though the camera should be fantastic, it isn?t! Most photos taken with the S4 Zoom are actually worse and more blurry than the photos taken with a normal Galaxy S4 (I9500 or I9505) which only has a 13MP camera.

Photo sample cropped and resized taken with Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom?s 16MP camera.

The only benefit that comes out from this camera is the gigantic 10x optical zoom. It is important to understand that only the optical zoom is a real zoom and that the digital zoom featured in all cameras is useless. Digital zoom is nothing more than just image cropping and resizing which eventually ends up in quality loss.

Photo sample cropped and resized taken with Samsung Galaxy S4?s 13MP camera.

Even though Galaxy S4 Zoom has a great 10x optical zoom, it is however just a downgrade from the original Galaxy Camera GC100 which had a better 21x optical zoom.

The camera found on Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom C1010 is almost the exact same camera used in Samsung?s Galaxy Camera GC100, which is very similar to the S4 Zoom in almost every aspect except that the Galaxy Camera wasn?t a phone. The device lacked the ability to make direct phone calls even though it had a 3G SIM card slot. You could however install voice and video call apps and use it as a phone also.

The best camera ever built on a smartphone still remains the one found on Nokia 808 PureView and the future Nokia Lumia 1020 which will pack the exact same camera that the 808 PureView packed a year ago.

Photo sample cropped and resized taken with Nokia 808 PureView?s 41MP camera.

As you can clearly see from the above photos, which were all taken at full resolution with their settings set to full high quality, then resized and cropped so they can approximately look the same, Galaxy S4 13MP beats Galaxy S4 Zoom?s 16MP camera. There?s not even worth mentioning again that Nokia 808 PureView?s 41MP easily outperformed both Galaxy S4s in terms of photo quality.

Other features of Galaxy S4 Zoom

As we already said before, Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is more related with Galaxy S2 than with the S4. The S4 Zoom comes with a 4.3 inch screen, the exact screen size of the S2, but with a slightly better resolution 540?960 instead of S2?s 480?800 and 1.5GB RAM instead of 1GB RAM. S4 Zoom?s screen resolution and RAM quantity is identical to what S4 Mini offers, but not the rest of its features?

S4 Zoom?s CPU is also similar to S2?s CPU, it comes with a Dual-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9, similar to S2?s Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 and they both come with the exact same GPU, the famous Mali-400.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (non-Zoom) comes in two versions: one with a Octa Core (two Quad Core CPUs) called I9500 and one with a Quad Core CPU called I9505. Even the Galaxy S3 comes with a Quad Core CPU. So the Galaxy S4 Zoom doesn?t have a Quad Core? it has a Dual Core, almost identical with the one found in S2. Unfortunately though, the S4 Zoom comes with a tiny 8GB internal memory, which is lower than S2?s two versions 16GB and 32GB internal memory.

And there?s one more thing which we found to be quite similar to the S2? It comes with an FM Radio. For some stupid reason, the FM Radio was removed the original S4. None of the S4s, I9500, I9505, I537 nor the newest and fastest S4 SHV-E330S comes with FM Radio, except for I9190 (S4 Mini) and of course for Galaxy S2 I9100 which together with S4 Mini seem to be the base for Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Shortly said, S4 Zoom is not worthy of carrying the name of S4, instead it should have been called Samsung Galaxy S2 Zoom. Galaxy S4 Zoom is far from being impressive compared to its own predecessor Galaxy Camera GC100.

Even though the Galaxy S4 Zoom is almost a complete failure, we still salute the idea of bringing real cameras with real optical zoom on smartphones, that?s definitely a good step in the right direction.

Higher cable, satellite prices boost Shaw's profit

(Reuters) - Canada's Shaw Communications Inc reported stronger-than-expected quarterly results and raised its cash-flow forecast, sending its shares up 3 percent in early trading.

But the company, the dominant cable TV operator in Western Canada, managed only a marginal rise in third-quarter profit as it lost subscribers to its video cable and satellite TV services.

Shaw said the number of subscribers to its video services fell by 26,578, or 1.3 percent, to 2.07 million in the quarter, while the number of those taking its "direct to home" satellite service slipped by 2,930 or 0.3 percent, to about 904,000.

"Subscriber losses in the core cable TV business were pretty much in line, maybe a little worse than anticipated," said David Heger, an analyst at brokerage Edward Jones.

"But they were better than they were in the (second) quarter. Perhaps they're starting an improving trend."

Shaw, which also operates the Global TV network, raised its 2013 cash-flow forecast to C$590 million-C$600 million from C$550 million and said it plans dividend increases of 5 to 10 percent in each of the next two years as a result of the higher cash flows and favorable market conditions.

The company also has 19 specialty networks including HGTV Canada, Food Network Canada, the History channel and Showcase.

Shaw's net income rose to C$250 million, or 52 Canadian cents per share, from C$248 million, or 53 Canadian cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 4 percent to C$1.33 billion.

Analysts on average had expected a profit of 45 Canadian cents per share, on revenue of C$1.30 billion ($1.24 billion), according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shaw had more shares outstanding in the third quarter than it did in the year-earlier quarter.

Apart from the pressure on its TV businesses, Shaw is facing fierce competition from Telus Corp, which is pushing out an internet-based TV product to lure away its customers.

Shaw added a net 17,719 landline telephone subscribers in the quarter, bringing the total to 1.35 million, and a net 4,157 internet subscribers, bringing the total to 1.88 million.

The company's shares were up 3.22 percent at C$24.71 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

New system uses low-power Wi-Fi signal to track moving humans -- even behind walls

June 28, 2013 ? The comic-book hero Superman uses his X-ray vision to spot bad guys lurking behind walls and other objects. Now we could all have X-ray vision, thanks to researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

Researchers have long attempted to build a device capable of seeing people through walls. However, previous efforts to develop such a system have involved the use of expensive and bulky radar technology that uses a part of the electromagnetic spectrum only available to the military.

Now a system being developed by Dina Katabi, a professor in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and her graduate student Fadel Adib, could give all of us the ability to spot people in different rooms using low-cost Wi-Fi technology. "We wanted to create a device that is low-power, portable and simple enough for anyone to use, to give people the ability to see through walls and closed doors," Katabi says.

The system, called "Wi-Vi," is based on a concept similar to radar and sonar imaging. But in contrast to radar and sonar, it transmits a low-power Wi-Fi signal and uses its reflections to track moving humans. It can do so even if the humans are in closed rooms or hiding behind a wall.

As a Wi-Fi signal is transmitted at a wall, a portion of the signal penetrates through it, reflecting off any humans on the other side. However, only a tiny fraction of the signal makes it through to the other room, with the rest being reflected by the wall, or by other objects. "So we had to come up with a technology that could cancel out all these other reflections, and keep only those from the moving human body," Katabi says.

Motion detector

To do this, the system uses two transmit antennas and a single receiver. The two antennas transmit almost identical signals, except that the signal from the second receiver is the inverse of the first. As a result, the two signals interfere with each other in such a way as to cancel each other out. Since any static objects that the signals hit -- including the wall -- create identical reflections, they too are cancelled out by this nulling effect.

In this way, only those reflections that change between the two signals, such as those from a moving object, arrive back at the receiver, Adib says. "So, if the person moves behind the wall, all reflections from static objects are cancelled out, and the only thing registered by the device is the moving human."

Once the system has cancelled out all of the reflections from static objects, it can then concentrate on tracking the person as he or she moves around the room. Most previous attempts to track moving targets through walls have done so using an array of spaced antennas, which each capture the signal reflected off a person moving through the environment. But this would be too expensive and bulky for use in a handheld device.

So instead Wi-Vi uses just one receiver. As the person moves through the room, his or her distance from the receiver changes, meaning the time it takes for the reflected signal to make its way back to the receiver changes too. The system then uses this information to calculate where the person is at any one time.

Possible uses in disaster recovery, personal safety, gaming

Wi-Vi, being presented at the Sigcomm conference in Hong Kong in August, could be used to help search-and-rescue teams to find survivors trapped in rubble after an earthquake, say, or to allow police officers to identify the number and movement of criminals within a building to avoid walking into an ambush.

It could also be used as a personal safety device, Katabi says: "If you are walking at night and you have the feeling that someone is following you, then you could use it to check if there is someone behind the fence or behind a corner."

The device can also detect gestures or movements by a person standing behind a wall, such as a wave of the arm, Katabi says. This would allow it to be used as a gesture-based interface for controlling lighting or appliances within the home, such as turning off the lights in another room with a wave of the arm.

Venkat Padmanabhan, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, says the possibility of using Wi-Vi as a gesture-based interface that does not require a line of sight between the user and the device itself is perhaps its most interesting application of all. "Such an interface could alter the face of gaming," he says.

Unlike today's interactive gaming devices, where users must stay in front of the console and its camera at all times, users could still interact with the system while in another room, for example. This could open up the possibility of more complex and interesting games, Katabi says.

Spy program gathered Americans' Internet records

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration gathered U.S. citizens' Internet data until 2011, continuing a spying program started under President George W. Bush that revealed whom Americans exchanged emails with and the Internet Protocol address of their computer, documents disclosed Thursday show.

The National Security Agency ended the program that collected email logs and timing, but not content, in 2011 because it decided it didn't effectively stop terrorist plots, according to the NSA's director, Gen. Keith Alexander, who also heads the U.S. Cyber Command. He said all data was purged in 2011.

Britain's Guardian newspaper on Thursday released documents detailing the collection, though the program was also described earlier this month by The Washington Post.

The latest revelation follows previous leaks from ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who is presumed hiding at a Moscow airport transit area, waiting to hear whether Ecuador, Iceland or another country might grant him asylum. He fled Hong Kong over the weekend and flew to Russia after being charged with violating American espionage laws.

The collection appears similar to the gathering of U.S. phone records, and seems to overlap with the Prism surveillance program of foreigners on U.S. Internet servers, both revealed by Snowden. U.S. officials have said the phone records can only be checked for numbers dialed by a terrorist suspect overseas. According to the documents published by The Guardian on Thursday, the Internet records show whom they exchanged emails with and the specific numeric address assigned to a computer connected to the Internet, known as the IP, or Internet Protocol, address.

The program, described in a top secret draft report from the NSA inspector general, described the efforts of then-NSA Director Gen. Mike Hayden to fill gaps in intelligence gathering after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. One NSA officer quoted in the report described "NSA standing at the U.S. border looking outward for foreign threats" and "the FBI looking within the United States for domestic threats. But no one was looking at the foreign threats coming into the United States. That was the huge gap that NSA wanted to cover."

The draft added that the sweeping phone and Internet data-gathering programs were meant to speed up the process of surveillance of a terrorist suspect overseas, because "the average wait time was between four and six weeks" to get a court order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. "Terrorists could have changed their telephone numbers or Internet addresses" before the NSA received permission to spy on them on U.S.-based phone or Internet systems.

Alexander said at a Baltimore conference on cybersecurity that the NSA decided to kill the Internet data gathering program because "it wasn't meeting what we needed and we thought we could better protect civil liberties and privacy by doing away with it."

He said the program was conducted under provisions of the Patriot Act, and that NSA leaders went to the Obama administration and Congress with the recommendation to shut it down.

Shawn Turner, a spokesman for the director of national intelligence, said the program has not resumed.

The Washington Post had described the Internet surveillance in an earlier report, without publishing the documents or releasing as many details. The Post described it as part of four secret surveillance programs ? two aimed at phone and Internet metadata, while two more target contents of phone and Internet communications.

Alexander, who has been up on Capitol Hill frequently for hearings and meetings since the NSA phone and email surveillance was made public, laid out a broad defense of the programs.

He said he worries that more leaks are coming, adding that "every time a capability is revealed we lose our ability to track those targets."

While never mentioning Snowden by name, Alexander said his irresponsible releases of classified information "will have a long term detrimental impact on the intelligence community's ability to detect future attacks."

He declined to provide more details on what the NSA is doing to prevent such leaks in the future. He has said that the agency is changing passwords and improving its ability to track what system administrators are doing.

On Thursday, he said he was looking at how the leak happened and the people involved. He said the NSA can't do its job without contractors because it doesn't have all the talent or access it needs to do the job.

To Hell and back: Inside Foley's famous fall 15 years later

Each and every day, Mick Foley hears the same question from wrestling fans around the globe: ?Did it hurt going through that table?? Fifteen years since the fateful night of June 28, 1998, The Hardcore Legend is still feeling the repercussions of being flung from the top of the Hell in a Cell by The Undertaker and plunging to the concrete below. For many spectators ? both fans and those in the locker room ? the visual of Mankind?s body crashing through the ringside announce table represents the height of ring brutality and still resonates today.

On the anniversary of a moment that defined an era, WWEClassics.com sat down with Foley, announcer Jim Ross, former referee Tim White and more of the men who experienced WWE?s most punishing match in person. What does the match mean to Mick 15 years later? What did the guys in the locker room think? And did it really hurt going through that table?

For the first time ever on WWE.com, watch the famous Hell in a Cell Match in its entirety

View never-before-seen photos of the in-ring action and the aftermath backstage

WWECLASSICS.COM: When you look at that match now, do you think the moment of you going off the top of the cell defines your career? And if so, do you regret or embrace that?

MICK FOLEY: I feel kind of like Adam West in his views towards being Batman. For so many years, he fought it. Just like for so many years it really felt like I had other matches that were worth talking about that seldom got mentioned. You either go on being frustrated about it or you learn to embrace it. I had a breakthrough moment at the?WWE Hall of Fame [Induction Ceremony this year], when I heard the story being told from Terry Funk?s point of view. I came to see that match in a whole new light and I came to better appreciate how much it affected people.

WWECLASSICS.COM: In your book, ?Have a Nice Day,? you mention that your opponent was originally supposed to be ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin, not The Undertaker. How do you think the match would have been different against Austin? Would the famous fall have ever happened?

FOLEY: Who knows? It may have been a completely different match. At a certain point, [WWE officials] were almost making it a ?Thunderdome?-type match like in ?Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,? where you would have different objects that would be attached to the cell. There was an idea for some sort of bungee that would allow us to propel ourselves to the top of the cell to allow us to recover the objects.

WWECLASSICS.COM: Once you knew you were wrestling The Undertaker, you knew you wanted to start the match on top of the cell?

FOLEY: That was Terry Funk?s brainchild. After Terry and I watched the?first Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, I looked at Terry and said, ?What am I going to do?? I was never really a great cage match wrestler. I didn?t have the athleticism to do a lot of the climbing. I certainly didn?t have any of Shawn Michaels? athleticism and I did not think I could live up to the standards that they had set. Terry thought about it for a while and said, ?It?s going to be tough, but maybe you ought to start the match on top of the cell.? He jokingly mentioned ?Hey, maybe you get thrown off and climb back up on top of the cell.? As he was laughing, I said, ?I think I can do that.? I wasn?t serious, but at that point I had that seed in my mind and I had a vision of what I wanted to accomplish.

WWECLASSICS.COM: Did that vision include being tossed off by your opponent?

FOLEY: In my original plan, I wanted to drop an elbow off the top of that cage. But that?s not what worked out.

WWECLASSICS.COM: The mindset of Mick Foley seems to be that you were always trying to top yourself. When you took that fall, did you inadvertently create a moment that was impossible to top?

FOLEY: I think that I created a moment that was impossible to top and I think I created a moment that shouldn?t be topped. [Mr. McMahon] talked about ?placing a governor on me? and then explained to me that a governor is a device that does not allow a car to exceed a certain speed.? That governor needed to be placed not only on me, but on other Superstars that wanted to top me. So many of the Superstars want to give people moments that they?ll never forget, but we don?t want to give them moments that could end Superstars? careers. Mine easily could have ended that night in Pittsburgh.

'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live' encourage binge-viewing: all new episodes to post on Mondays

By Jethro Nededog

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Binge-viewing has arrived for online soaps.

The Online Network (TOLN) announced on Tuesday that it will post a week's worth of episodes of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" on Mondays via Hulu, Hulu Plus and iTunes starting Monday, July 1.

"Now viewers will be able to choose to watch one episode each day or binge view some or all of that week's shows at once starting each Monday," the statement read.

"Together with the MORE shows, viewers can play or save up to six TOLN programs per week - all available on Mondays - providing even more flexibility to watch anytime, and anywhere."

Previously, TOLN staggered episodes with "All My Children" on Mondays and Wednesdays; "One Life to Live" on Tuesdays and Thursdays with both on Fridays.

Earlier this month, show producer Prospect Park and the I.A.T.S.E. local unions announced that they have resolved their issues over the production of "All My Children" and "One Life To Live" over the Union's belief that the two shows had gone over budget and violated a labor agreement in the process.

Production on the soap operas resumes on August 12.

BuzzFeed Says New ?Flight Mode' Campaign Shows ?The Consumerization Of B2B Marketing'

buzzfeed flight modeBuzzFeed always seems to be the first online publication that comes up when people want to talk about smart, creative approaches to "native" advertising, so here's a cool example of what the site is doing with advertisers ? it's partnering with GE to allow readers to navigate the site in "Flight Mode." The campaign was designed to promote GE Aviation's presence at the Paris Air Show, a weeklong industry event that ends today. In Flight Mode, BuzzFeed becomes a grid of articles, and readers fly over that grid in a little plane. When they alight on a headline that interests them, they just hit the space bar and they can read the article in the normal view.

Peloton's Android-powered static bike lets you spin from home (video)

Pelotons Androidpowered static bike lets you spin from home video

Here's some gear that'll ensure you'll never again have to fight for space in that hyper-competitive spin class. The Peloton Bike is two grand's worth of static bike that's designed to bring the gym experience to your home with a number of innovative touches. First up, the Android 4.1-running unit is controlled by a 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4470 with 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, ANT+, Bluetooth 4.0 and Ethernet. It's connected to a 21.5-inch 1080p multitouch display, which'll let you stream classes from Peloton's NYC studio live and on-demand. The display also holds a webcam and microphone, so you can still swear at your friends / the instructor as if you were there in real life.

Secondly, the New York design house has abandoned the bike chain -- replacing it with a belt drive that'll prevent your training getting too noisy, and a magnetic resistance system to reduce wear and tear on the flywheel. The company has taken to Kickstarter to raise funds for the initial production run, requesting $250,000 before it can release the hardware. Pre-ordering now means that you can get the bike for $1,700 with a year's worth of subscription to the spin classes, after which point will cost you $40 a month. Interested in learning more? There's a video after the break.

Mursi's controversial Islamist Luxor governor to quit: party

By Yasmine Saleh

CAIRO (Reuters) - The governor of Egypt's Luxor province, controversially appointed despite belonging to a hardline Islamist group that massacred 58 tourists in Luxor in 1997, will step down on Sunday "for the sake of Egypt", the group said.

President Mohamed Mursi of the moderate Islamist Muslim Brotherhood infuriated many last Monday with his appointment of Adel Mohamed al-Khayat, reaching out for a political alliance with the more radical al-Gamaa al-Islamiya ahead of a big wave of opposition-led protests expected to start on June 30.

But al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, which has renounced violence, appeared to want to show that it could put Egypt's needs first - especially the tourist industry, a mainstay of the economy that has suffered badly in two years of unrest.

Safwat Abdel Ghani, one of the group's leaders, was quoted by the state-owned Al-Ahram news website as saying the governor would announce his resignation on Sunday. Sources in the cabinet and the presidency said they were not aware of such move.

"We are not after any post," Abdel Ghani told an earlier news conference. "We asked the new governor to resign for the sake of Egypt."

Both Mursi's Islamists and the leftist-secular opposition are trying to marshal support before June 30.

On Friday, thousands of protesters from al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups staged a big pro-Mursi rally and warned opponents, who they described as atheists, Western agents and anti-Islamic, that they would be crushed if they forced Mursi out. The opposition called it an attempt to "terrorise" them.

PROTESTS

Mursi's appointment of a large number of Islamist governors including Khayat triggered protests in many cities.

Mursi himself defended the appointment of Khayat in the newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm on Saturday, saying there had "never been a court ruling" against him, and cautioned that the state would act if the June 30 rally turned violent.

The protest is being organised by a group of young independent Egyptians called Tamarud (Rebel), which says it has gathered over 15 million signatures in a month - more than one in six of the population - calling for Mursi to quit.

Both the youth movement and established opposition leaders are demanding an early presidential election after what they describe as Mursi's failure to live up to any of his promises of more freedoms and better economic and living conditions.

But Mursi's allies say he needs more than a year in office to tackle Egypt's deep economic and political problems.

Al-Gamaa al-Islamiya renounced violence and condemned al Qaeda in ideological U-turns a decade ago, and recently founded the Building and Development Party to expand its political presence.

Many of its members were jailed for decades under president Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled by mass protests more than two years ago. Mursi freed them last year, shortly after his election, with many moving into public life.

However, some of the recently freed members still defend their violent past. Assem Abdel Maged, convicted and jailed for his role in the killing of more than 100 policemen in one attack in the 90s and now leading a pro-Mursi campaign, said he had never regretted any of his actions.

Top 10 Ways to Deal With a Slow Internet Connection

Sometimes, slow internet is the universe's way of telling you to go play outside. Other times, it's the universe's cruel joke to destroy your productivity. Here are 10 ways to troubleshoot, fix, or just survive a slow internet connection.

Top 10 Ways to Deal With a Slow Internet ConnectionS

10. Check Your Speeds (and Your Plan)

Sometimes, your internet is slow because you're only paying for slow internet. Log onto your provider's web site (or give them a call) and find out what plan you have. Then, head on over to Speedtest.net and run a speed test. If the numbers match up to what you're paying for, then your network is working fine and you're just paying for slow internet?and the best way to speed it up will be to upgrade. (Though some of the below tricks will help you eke out a bit more speed). If the numbers don't match, read on for a few ways to fix that problem.

9. Troubleshoot Your Hardware

Before you go cursing your internet provider, give your modem and router a quick reset (that is, turn them off and on again) and see if that helps. Check the other computers in your house to see if their internet is slow, too?if the problem only happens on one computer, the problem is that computer, not your router or modem. Run through these troubleshooting steps to see if it's a hardware problem. Then, once you fix your router or modem (or replace it), you'll be browsing speedily once again. Check out our complete guide to knowing your network for more router tips, too.

8. Fix Your Wi-Fi Signal

If you're using Wi-Fi, you might find that your router and internet are fine, but your wireless signal is weak, causing a slowdown. In that case, you may need to reposition, tweak, and boost your router with a few tricks. There are more than we could share in one paltry paragraph?in fact, we have a whole top 10 list just for fixing Wi-Fi, so check that out if you suspect wireless signal is the problem.

7. Turn Off Bandwidth-Hogging Plugins and Apps

If your hardware seems to be in working order, see if any other programs are hogging the connection. For example, if you're downloading files with BitTorrent, regular web browsing is going to be slower. You should also try installing extensions like AdBlock Plus or FlashBlock, which will block some of the bandwidth-hogging ads, animations, and videos that can use up your connection. They probably won't solve all your issues, but they can at least help make a slow connection feel more usable.

6. Try a New DNS Server

When you type an address into your browser?like lifehacker.com?your computers uses something called DNS to look up and translate that into a computer-friendly IP address. Sometimes, though, the servers your computer uses to look up that information can have issues, or go down entirely. Check out our guide to finding the fastest (and most secure) DNS servers for more information. If your default DNS servers aren't having problems, then you probably won't find too much of an improvement with an alternative server?but it might speed up your browsing by a few milliseconds, at least. 5. Optimize Your Web for a Slow Connection

Troubleshooting slow internet can take awhile, and in the meantime you still need to browse. Or maybe you're at a coffee shop or on a plane, and there's nothing you can do about your slow speeds. In that case, it's time to optimize your web for a slower connection: use mobile or HTML versions of your favorite sites, disable images, and use features like Opera Turbo. In fact, we recommend setting up a secondary browser on your laptop for just such a situation?it can really make a difference when you need to work on a slow connection.

4. Work Smart

If you need to get work done on your slow connection, you may have to prioritize tasks differently than if your internet were super fast. So, separate your tasks into bandwith-heavy and bandwidth-light ones. Get the light ones done when you're on your slow connection, and group all the bandwidth-heavy tasks together so you can do them if and when you get faster access (and if you can't get it at home, see if you can borrow a neighbor or relative just for those tasks). Similarly, work outside your browser whenever possible?if you're doing basic writing, do it in your favorite text editor instead of in your browser. If you plan your work ahead of time, you can at least make the best of a bad situation. Photo remixed from Kirill__M (Shutterstock).

3. Call Your Internet Provider

If you've gone through all the necessary troubleshooting steps and your internet is still slow, then it's time to call your internet provider and see if the problem is on their end. Remember: don't just assume they've done something wrong, and treat your customer service representative with respect. You're much more likely to get good results. Check out our guide to getting better customer service for tips on cutting the line and getting your way. You might want to see if you can get a better deal on your internet, while you're at it?especially if they've been giving you the wrong speeds all this time. Photo by sergign (Shutterstock).

2. Find a New Provider

If your ISP can't help you (maybe they don't provide the speeds you want, or maybe you're just sick of their horrible customer service), it's time to find a new ISP. That may mean you need to switch to a different type of provider, like cable, DSL, satellite, or fiber, so you should do a little research before you pick up the phone. Check out our guide to choosing the best provider in your area, and make sure they provide the type of speeds you want. Photo remixed from Kim Scarborough and Andreas Gradin.

1. Use Your Time Productively

If you're lucky, you can get your internet speeds back up to snuff quickly and stress-free. But, if not, you can at least try to put a good spin on it: As long as your work isn't too bandwidth-intensive, slow internet could actually make you more productive. After all, if Facebook takes a minute to load, you're a lot less likely to pop over for a "quick break" (that turns into an hour-long photo-fest) when you're supposed to be working on that term paper.
